Site map for a website
Site is a formal listing of the pages in a website, for the crawlers and users to understand the website structure. A site map can serve as a plan like a building plan of construction for a website. Each and every link item in a sitemap document is understood as a separate page by search engine robots
The standard file names for a site map are sitemap.xml or sitemap.html, this particular file will be looked in by the robots of search engine and used as index for the complete website or web pages
sitemap standards set the standards for site map . The XML sitmaps are most widely used by the automated algorithms , otherwise called bots .
Sitmap as a HTML file should contain , each and every individual page’s title or headline , which should be hyperlinked to the respective page

Standards to be followed for a sitemap 1. File name should be “sitemap.html” only , first letter “s” should be lowercase only
2. File should be in the root folder of the web hosting
3. File should not contain any key word stuffing
4. Broken link should not be there in the sitemap
5. “Sitmap.xml” file should also be placed , it is suggested to generate from google sitmap generator, a readable format for robots
6. Sitemap should be submitted to google sitemap submission
Using your google id , login to google webmaster central and submit the sitemap
7. Define the frequency of update in the XML sitemap
8. Define the frequency of robot invite in the XML sitemap
9. Locate the sitemap in Either main menu or header or footer of the website in home page
10. Make the URLs SEF (search Engine Friendly) in the website , so that Sitemap navigation will be easier for the Search engines
11. Test the Sitemap for compatibility with any leading browser for the alignment
12. Update sitemap for any small change in the site structure
13. Sitemap structure should be simple and easy ti understand for the end user , should be in such a way , even a website with 500+ pages , if user sees the sitemap , they should be able to locate the page they are looking for from the sitemap in not more than 15 seconds
14. Sitemap should be tested for compatibility with the mobile browsers
15. Site map should not be loaded with big images or instead small buttons can be used to decorate , make sure the size is not exceeding 10 kb
